We do not implement the policies put into place by some bloggers of using the nofollow rel tag on comments. Our reasoning?
Well, Google suggests that to eliminate spam marketing by webmasters that websites that allow user content use the nofollow tag. This means Google will then not follow that link, and not credit it as a true linkback. While a great concept, the widescale implementation of this severely punishes newcomers to the web.
Now, their nofollow tag might work well for completely unedited and unmanned blogs. But we feel it is a bloggers responsibility to keep their blog spam free. By all means moderate comments (as we do), and purge spam. If blog comments are actively purged of spam, then the active participants get their due reward by commenting on articles and including their link.
The fault, and reason for nofollow, is from bloggers who do not manage their comments. What is contained on a blog, in the content, as well as the comments is the responsibility of the blogger. Every blogger should take that concept to heart and maintain their pages, or close comments. One or the other.
Fact is, Google divides a page by the number of links on it anyways. A page with 100 links provides a link 1/100th the link juice that a page with only a single link would have. So comments pages are pretty watered down anyway.

I really agree this statement:”active participants get their due reward by commenting on articles and including their link.”
Moderate comments does need time but i think the long term result would be great..Great move…

I am still trying to figure this out. I have changed my blog code to make it dofollow and thus far I have not been spammed, but I’m still too new to even have a page rank. I guess I will have to go to comment moderation if it becomes an issue. Thanks for the bit of info at least it has shed a little light on the difference. The Silent Majority

I’ve yet to have any problems on my blogspot site, I have had some spaming on my wordpress site, but nothing major. If spamming does occur I will simply delete it I really see no future problems. I have a total of 10 blogspot blogs most of them fairly new.

I think that dofollow blogging is by far the best way to go. My blog is dofollow and I try to stick with other blogs that are are also dofollow. It just makes things so much better for everyone. Bloggers get more commentators and those commenting get some link juice from the blog as well. It is a win-win situation.
To block spammers the best way is to use Akismet, I think it is now available for 20 different blog platforms and is totally free. Eliminates a majority of spam for you.

Agree with you that newcomers are punished under this system. Also agree with Political Tutor.
I am just waiting for the site I created, Political Guerrilla, to have atleast three months of quality unique content before I add comments and dofollow tag. Then I will definitely open up the floor to anyone with an opinion, and inreturn give them some backlink juice as Political Tutor stated.
